I'm getting around doing a book tour!

One of the biggest tools authors need to utilize is the blog. Not just their own as I've advised many of my authors to do but to make guest appearances on other authors blogs. The more traffic, the better.

But balancing that act with writing can be tough, no doubt. Not only should you come up with new content for each blog but you should weigh your options of doing a giveaway or not. One blog I visited this past week had very little in the way of comments, but I don't know about the traffic To see the posts, head on over to Tonya Kinzer's blog to see what I did. Granted, these posts are almost all recycled content from 2009, that doesn't mean that Tonya's readers have seen them. Click here for the last link.

Having a pool of authors who write for me makes a big difference in not just their marketing but mine too. Some of my authors, like Margie Church are dialed into a different group of readers that I'd like to be connected with. So popping over to her site once in a blue moon (can't give her too much of an ego boost...) helps her and me since our audiences are similiar.

The SEO on that sort of stuff is great too but ultimately a writer should be looking to step outside their normal reader group and constantly expand their brand name and readership base.

Higher traffic blogs for well known publishing houses that allow guest spots also make a HUGE difference but remember, you're opening yourself up to new readers so first impressions count. This I kept in mind when I talked to the folks at Romance at Random about being the bad boy of romance. I didn't talk much from an editor's standpoint but more from an author's. But I did share my passion about this genre though.

Remember, In romance, readers want an escape with the characters they can relate to..

In Erotica, readers want a sexual escape that stimulates the mind and doesn't screw too badly with their emotions. In Erotic Romance I want to be taken on a longer, harder, deeper ride outside of myself.

Publishers that capture the true hears and bodies and minds of their audiences stay in business and do well. Their authors have potential to do very well also.

BOUND FOR LOVE

Sizzler Editions/Intoxication, our premium imprint for erotic romance, is seeking romantic BDSM stories for our upcoming anthology, Bound for Love.

Throughout history love and sex as submission and love and sex as pain have been linked. For example, this link is revealed in commonly used phrases like "the bonds of love," "the chains of love," "the ties that bind," "prisoner of love," "captive heart," "love hurts," "love is pain,"

Stories should reflect this connection be between B&D and romance. What after all could be sweeter than a bottom's submission to a top? In some ways love between leather folks, slaves and master/mistresses, is the most honest straightforward love there is. In short, we want stories that capture the romance in bondage and the bondage in romance made explicit.

Stories for Bound for Love should be 4-9k in length with a focus on the relationship development. Each needs to have a strong focus on both BDSM with a classic romance type of plot and a HEA ending. If either can be removed, the story is not for this anthology.

We seek unpublished submissions though we will consider reprints.

The advance payment against a prorated share of the royalties will be $25 for stories under 5000 words and $35 for stories over 5000.

The Correct Point of View

Do you know which POV your story is told in? Do you know the correct Point of View your story SHOULD be written from? If you answer first or third person POV, you’re obviously being a smart ass. Let’s rephrase the question, shall we?

What character’s point of view should my story be told in?

There, this defines the question better. And the answer is simple. The main character’s POV. But what if you have two characters? Presumably a Hero and a Heroine, since this is Romance I’m mainly covering, let’s stick with that assumption. What if you have a villain? Do we tell any part of the story from that character’s perspective?

Many writers assume that during major scene changes, the perspective should change. They’re half correct. A lot of writers suggest that we need to know about the villain if there is one, and that character should get a say too. Again, they’re half right.

The truth is, POV is simple. Tell the story from the Point of View of the character that has the most to lose.

What do I mean by that? Let’s break it down. In a typical romance novel, we have the hero and heroine and a plot that runs something like this:

Hero meets Heroine (hey you’re hot)

Hero and Heroine end up in bed (light cigar/cigarette)

Argument separates the two (God he’s a jerk/she’s a bitch)

And in the end, something happens that is greater than both the Hero and Heroine’s issues that makes them examine their beliefs and realize they need the other.

Let’s figure this out (I need you/I love you)

HEA/Happily for Now

Throw in a villain and that character’s appearance should be before or during the cigar in the above example. Considering that much of today’s erotic romance is paranormal or urban fantasy, there is a bad guy waiting to kill off both Hero/Heroine.

So what determines whose point of view the story is told from? This is also easy. For the story to flow without head hopping, let’s use a simple rule of thumb (courtesy of Morgan Hawke www.darkerotica.net)

IF the story is under 20k, you simply need ONE character where the event happens to THEM and ONLY them.

IF the story is under 40k, then we have an event that affects two characters.

IF the story is under 100k, we have three characters who get a say, usually because the villain is the one doing shit to the world/universe—including the H/H.

Now that we’ve narrowed that down and fixed the potential to head hop all over the place, thus eliminating characters that are central but not integral for POV purposes, we’re left with the one question:

Who gets to talk?

Readers get attached to characters they care about and have built relationships with, just as in reality. Kill off a favorite character from your reader base and you’d better believe you’re going to hear about it! Alter that character’s world somehow and again, you’ll get feedback. But what if the hero and heroine both have something to lose? Then what do you do?

Refer back to length of the story. Who has the greatest loss, and the greatest gain? Write from THAT one character’s POV and ONLY change scenes if word length allows for it and only if that character’s journey makes us feel something universal.

I recently read a story where head hopping occurred so much because the writer thought to write scenes like we see in TV. Take Burn Notice for example: We have Michael Westin, (The hero) Fiona (Heroine) and all the side characters, most notably Sam, the drunk former CIA op who we get to see frequently. POV switches don’t really occur much because the story is narrated by Michael Westin, but when we do get those changes, Westin is still narrating. That works because people need to see a lot of visuals and TV/movies allow for those shifts to occur. The average attention span is not that long.

But FICTION writing doesn’t. You’ll end up with unsmooth transitions, annoying head hopping issues that make the reader THROW YOUR BOOK THE FUCK AWAY!

In FICTION, you do two things. You show the reader what YOU want them to see; otherwise they’ll see something else. And you make the story smooth. By sticking to word limit/reason for changes, you’ll eliminate guesswork in your plotting.

Some writers can get away with multiple POV changes. Sherrylin Kenyon for example can, she has a built in audience that somehow doesn’t care about the change from the H/H to Ash or Stryker. So does Laurel K. Hamilton, but because she writes in First Person POV, she doesn’t have that ability. But if she wrote in third person, she could afford to change because she’s ESTABLISHED. Chances are that you’re not them. (And if you are, thanks for reading my article!)

Christine Feehan does an excellent job of keeping the POV between her hero and heroine. So does Richelle Mead. And Rebecca York. Those authors are authors who don’t write what I do, but I learn from them because they’re where I hope to be someday.

To reinforce the key points, I’ll leave with my two rules for simplification.

Tell the story from the character’s POV that has the MOST to lose
Use word length 20k = 1 character. 40k, 2 characters. 60k-100k+=3 and ONLY three.

That should simplify things in your stories. Happy writing!

I'll be teaching Male POV for Writers and Creating Better Heroes August 15th-28th online. The outline follows:

In this workshop, we’ll break down the eight archetypes a little, give a bit of background on the male mindset and psychology behind it and delved deeper into the wonderful yet confusing male mind.

We’ll explore how his issues affect your plot, why what those issues are is important and how we make him come across. We’ll discuss cross gender writing and author bias, tearing bias down so we can give you new insight into the male mind.

Having already hosted this workshop several times, I have had success with it but looking back on doing it a third time for Collette’s group, I wanted to add more depth, cover more information and add more value to your writing. Due to the increase in romance novels being published AND the increase in m/m romances, I’ve added two new sections to the workshop that will be more beneficial to all authors.

“What Men Really Care about” and “The Gay Male Lifestyle” will explore this POV deeper in hopes that I can assist you in writing more convincing gay males. I’ll cover my bias about the stories I’ve read so far later but just know we have more content for you 

What you’ll learn from this class

• How to take any male character from any movie/story and modify him to fit your story

Using character creations sheets (don’t groan!) that have all the relevant information you’ll need, you’ll be able to craft male characters that are just as deep as your female characters. Getting inside the heads of your male characters is the most important aspect of “how to write” them.

Cross gender writing can make or break an author’s career if they cannot portray the opposite gender clearly and accurately. With the growing popularity of M/M romances, it’s becoming increasingly important for males to be portrayed in the proper light! We’ll cover all that here and a lot more!

Tips for learning the romance writing business include having an understanding of the publishing model, both the outdated NY one and the currently changing e-book model.

Make some friends. You’ll need the support system for things like going to Romantic Times, Romance Writers of America Nationals, RomCon, and other large industry conferences. Plus that support system will keep you together when you’re ready to throw away your career, no matter HOW long or short it is. Did you all see what happened to Ju dy Mays when someone outed her as an erotic romance author? The fans of hers rallied and supported her to the tune of 5,000 likes on her newly fan established Facebook page. In less than four hours.

Social Media – Learn it. Use it. Master it. It’s that simple. You have NO choice nowadays but to be on social media. If you're a shy person, quit writing and expecting money to roll in.

Read editor blogs like mine and Guide to Literary Agents. The information there is jam packed with tips outside of my experiences. Also, don’t forget WriteSEX

Take classes on craft, marketing and education. This advice hails from the importance of learning and expanding your ability to write about various genres, cross genre write and refine your voice. Don't bother with Dodd's historicals (this is a bias against historical romance novels on my part) but her contemporary and paranormal stuff is excellent. That's just print stuff. For E-books, Lora Leigh, Joey W. Hill, Marianne LaCroix, Kiernan Kelly (We just put out her second collection of m/m erotic romance stories) Stephanie Burke, Treva Harte (writer and owner of Loose ID) Marty Rayne (one of my students)Joanna Wilde, Celia Kyle, Alexandria Rayne, Em Petrova, (hell, go pick up any of the Secrets Anthologies out from Red Sage) Sascha Illyvich, Cherise Sinclair (another student of mine) Brenda Williamson, Brenna Lyons, Belinda McBride, Barbara Karmazin (RIP) Marie Harte, MaryJanice Davidson (over at Loose-ID) Suzanne Rock, Cheyenne McCray. That should get you started learning about Erotic Romance. That's their "attempt" at erotic romance and they are the gold standard in publishing, with numerous authors who go onto bigger, better and more lucrative careers.

Join the Romance Writers of America. If you're a male romance author, attend meetings, regularly and get over any nervousness that may occur because the chapter members are predominantly female and many are where you want to be already. And many of them are gracious enough and kind enough to pay back as well as forward. Be warned RWA is still jumping (slowly) on the ebook bandwagon but that's a national issue, not a local chapter issue. The local chapters are very supportive of their members and share a TON of information. If you can afford it join Passionate Ink, the erotic/spicy chapter of RWA. Next year I plan to be speaking at their annual club meeting at RWA Nationals since it'll be in Anaheim CA.

To have or NOT to have..An Agenda!

That IS the question my publicist asked some time back in her facebook feed

The number of authors that responded about their beliefs and how they sneak into stories wasn't anything out of the ordinary and didn't raise any eyebrows from this editor until I received an email from one of my authors discussing his beliefs about our market at Sizzler Editions and m/m stories.

The way the email (to me) was worded made him sound like an uninformed writer so I politely set the record straight (haha) for him. He did some research and as I knew he would, he came back and confirmed my point on the topic.

I bring this up to make a point. When writing a story, the key thing is to ask yourself: Why are you writing this story? Is it to tell a great story of love gone wrong, gone right with the appropriate partner(s)? Or is it to advance an agenda?

The truth only really matters if we're talking about sales. If you've built up your audience the way any author should, then your only worry is whether your fans agree or disagree with your viewpoint. In the case of erotic romance, there IS NO ROOM FOR AN AGENDA OF ANY SORT.

Romance readers do NOT want to deal with the real world struggles of the day, nor do they want to hear some author, established or not spew forth an opinion. They want to escape into a fantasy world we create whereby the same sort of challenges can be overcome but the ultimate challenge is, can your couple make it til the end of the story?

The key of romance stories is that "love conquers all." The reason this is so popular is because our world, our reality is so fucked. As of this writing, there was talk about Prop 8 being passed AGAIN. IT failed. Three times. Gays in California do NOT want marriage. (based solely on the failure to pass this proposition) And there is talk of another proposition trying to legalize weed smoking in California, again an initiative that failed to rally enough votes to pass. On a larger scale, there's the stilted economy, trouble in the Mid East and more shit than we know what to do with.

Readers spend money on authors they trust to take them out of this nonsense. They're parting with dollars in hopes that you the author will take them on a magical journey of love, lust, ecstasy, grief, in short, an emotional gauntlet that ends with an HEA.

Yes I do occasionally sneak in my beliefs into my stories, usually as humor. How many people think John Kerry is dead and no one's told him yet? The answer? He's a vampire!

If you've got an agenda, save it for non fiction.

I'll probably throw this in here with a snippet because it's relevant to writers on all levels. WriteSEX is the blog we started exactly a year ago from last week. My first post of the year was on the mechanics of the blog and why writers need a resource like this. From the blog:

When I chose the players, I had an idea in mind. Not only did I want to partner with other professionals, but I wanted to bring something different, a powerhouse of well rounded talent that you the writer would benefit from. Becoming a successful writer isn’t just about writing a great story. It’s never been just about that. Though that IS the secret to making money, right? Just cracked the formula, didn’t I?

Sort of.

A great story is one that not only reads well, is written well but reaches a broad audience. Using the proper words to create images in the readers mind helps define your style as a writer but it also gives you potential for an even greater opportunity to capture market share. We’re not competing against one another, but rather working towards a common goal of enjoyment and entertainment, albeit sexual in nature. Some of us want a little romance, others want a little kink, and still others are uncertain until they’ve been exposed to your work.

Having stories that fit an audio market capture that all important sense many of us miss out on. It’s important to understand what audio erotica is and why we’re talking about this.

A need to be varied and flexible with story craft is important too. So is the desire to crank out fresh material.

This week's post by Ralph Greco Jr. entitled No Muse is Good Muse sums up the entire principle of writing. It's definitely worth a look along with all the back posts.

Why will I keep hammering on this? Because too many writers still, mostly newer ones, do NOT think enough about their careers. Or their own writing styles. I'm editing an anthology of valentines day stories right now and while the stories are great and awesome and HOT (rawr!) I'm still dealing with two new writers and whatever hand I can have in making their careers EASIER while not straining my own lifestyle is what I want.

Questions: The Editor Says: Don't ask, just write!

The biggest theme I'm seeing from new writers lately is the asking of questions. Not the typical, "how do I submit" (see sidebar) or what are you looking for? (Again, see sidebar) but more important questions to the author, not so much for me.

The questions I get asked usually run along these lines:

*Do you think I should change this POV...
*Do you think this character could be done better if...
*Would it help the story if I...

And many others. The thing is, all these questions do is attempt to relieve pressure from you the writer and put it on me the editor. Ergo, if you submit to me based on my "suggestions" (which you asked for) then if it doesn't sell, guess who takes flack?

Not only does this put the decision making on me, it TAKES AWAY from YOUR creativity. The story is YOURS. I can't tell it better than you. You're the one who breathes life into the characters, you're the one who turns the gears on the plot. You're responsible for making sure your plot flows. It's on YOU the WRITER to even overcome the sound of your voice when reading aloud.

Short changing you doesn't make me a happy editor. You may be thinking, well I get paid anyway so as long as that works, it's all good, right?

Wrong.

Editors pick up a number of things from authors, including not so much what sells, but what trends authors are heading towards. I as an editor would never think zombies would be popular, but the writer side of me, (along with half a dozen other authors) see this trend and are running wild with it in Urban Fantasy.

We also get a sense of popular style. It's our job to make sure that the story flows better than when yo wrote it, but if you're writing in an outdated style that makes NO sense for our calls for submissions, it's our job to tell you such and to correct that. If I suddenly see a ton of submissions that look like the authors were on acid when they wrote, perhaps it's time I made a call to the local drug dealer. If I see one author, same style, perhaps it's time I called the author's drug dealer and told him to back off.

The point of all this really is that it's your story. You're the author who chose (or was chosen) to bring these characters to light, and now you have to deal with the consequences. Writer's Block be damned.

The clearly defined synopsis

As an editor, I'm requesting writers to send in a synopsis along with the first 5k. The reason for the 5k is simple:

The first 5k of any story tells me as an editor a number of things:

1. It tells me as an editor that you can write (I know, it seems trivial)

2. It tells me if you’ve got story flow OR if you’re almost there and I can spend time helping improve the story for sales purposes.

Truthfully, most editors know a good story from maybe one or two pages, because the writer engages the reader that quickly. Now that we've settled that, let's move onto the synopsis.

What I as an editor want is a pithy, clear cut synopsis that defines the romantic conflict, any outside conflict and the main characters and I want it in no more than 3-5 paragraphs.

Imagine it's like a query letter to an agent. You'll give me the following:

1st paragraph: Hook me. Think high concept.

2nd paragraph: Introduce hero/herione BRIEFLY

3rd Paragraph: Introduce Hero/Herione BRIEFLY

4th Paragraph: Romantic conflict

5th paragraph: your SHORT bio.

It should look like this:

Can open honesty lead to trust? Covenant of Wolves 1: Stalker (Dub Mix) explores this idea with Prince Faolan and Millie the Fae in modern day America and Faery.

Blessed by the Moon Goddess with extraordinary powers beyond that of normal wolf shifters, Prince Faolan commands a group known as the Protectors. Their one goal is to watch over humanity and Otherworldly Creatures. Lately, the Unseelie court of Faery has threatened to start a war with the Seelie court, which would spread to the Earth realm and destroy everything.

Millie is a military agent assigned by the Unseelie government to track down Prince Faolan and sway his Protectors to ally with her government in exchange for return of her mother, whom they hold captive. Keeping her reasons for his allegiance a secret becomes more difficult to due to the lustful desires they both possess towards each other.

During their first sexual encounter, she accidentally infects him with Fae Lust, an incurable disease that forces those infected to have frequent intercourse, or suffer painful consequences that eventually lead to insanity if left un-sated.

Prince Faolan also infects Millie with Diane’s Curse, binding them together as mates and creating an emotional bond between the two that Faolan absently forgets to mention until Millie expresses deeper feelings for him

Having a mate would be a liability to Faolan due to his enemies. Millie cannot have a wolf mate due to her Kingdom’s laws forbidding inter species breeding.

The two visit the Unseelie Kingdom to cure the Fae Lust, the Cyber-Fae, an elite race of cybernetic enhanced Faeries label them as enemies of the state. Fleeing to Earth becomes difficult as the pair is chased. Upon returning to Earth, the Moon Goddess tells them they must topple the ruler of the Unseelie Kingdom.

This is the first book in a series.

I am a published erotic romance author with several releases through Renaissance E-books and Total E-bound. My work has been nominated for CAPA from The Romance Studio. My contemporary romance Apollo’s Choice is a Top Pick from Night Owl Romance. I continue to write for Renaissance E-books and Total E-bound with releases throughout the year. Formatting Guidelines for Sizzler Intoxications

MANUSCRIPT FORMAT

Your book should be carefully prepared and proofread before submission. Renaissance E Books expects all submissions to be free of mistakes in spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

* Renaissance E Books accepts submissions in Word RTF or DOC formats only.
* All ms. should be single spaced.
* Do not put an extra line or space between paragraphs – this is a no-no.
* Margins should be 1.5" (inch) all around - top, bottom, left, right.
* In Format set First Line to 0.2"
* Font should be Times New Roman, 14 point.
* Font color should be Black only!
* Use plain text only, no fancy styles or formatting.
* Do not embed images, hyperlinks (even to other parts of your ms.) or other elements of any kind.
* Avoid the use of inserted symbols like Latin or the British symbol for Pound.
* Put a Page Break (not a Section or Next Page break) at the end of every chapter. And at the ends of the title page and any other introductory matter, like a Preface or Dedication.
* Chapter headings should be 18 pt bold, typed in all capital letters and centered. If there is a chapter title like "The Dream" it should be in all capital letters and on the same line as the chapter number, in this format:
CHAPTER III. THE DREAM
* Title page should have your name and address and email upper left.
* If you are using a pseudonym it should be typed below the title rather than your real name, so we are sure to use it when the book is published.
* Title should be in 18 pt bold, all capital letters and centered.
* Below that should be the word "By" in 18 pt, with a capital and lower case letter, centered.
* Below that, should be the name you want the book published under should also be in 18 pt bold and all capital letters and centered.

Couple of things - Blog direction change

First off, I'll be changing the direction of this blog to focus on editing. Since I'm taking over as Editor (co editor really) at Sizzler Editions for the erotic romance line (Intoxications), I'd like to make sure writers have a resource that I can point writers to on craft, quality writing and what exactly we're looking for. Over the next few weeks I'll be focusing specifically on exactly what Sizzler Editions wants and writing tips to help you polish your manuscript there.

Anthology is called "Fang Bangers" edited by Lori Perkins of Ravenous and L. Perkins Agency. My story "Jan's Punishment" is the story of the wolf Prince Faolan and his male submissive, Jan the Fae. The struggle for Prince Faolan to deal with his second submissive is apparent as Jan continues to act up and disrespect Faolan's mate, Millie even while he yearns for Faolan's sweet control.

Jan’s Punishment

Prince Faolan hated this. He sighed as he sat in his chair with the paper and a lit cigar, the end of which he’d nearly chewed off, An empty glass of cognac sat on the table beside him. The wolf inside him growled in irritation at that stupid faery living in his house. Slumping against the chair, he folded and set the paper down on the table beside him and put his cigar in the ash tray.
The aroma wafted in a plume of smoke that smelled like earth and cocoa.
He groaned.
Anya’s words rang in his head. “You have to punish him. You agreed to be his dominant and teach him to behave while Millie is away.”
He lowered his head to his hands and sighed heavily. The poor bastard fae liked it rough in bed and was his only source of sexual satisfaction when Miss Millie wasn’t around.
The Fae Lust had taken an interesting turn when Faolan realized that Jan’s mouth or tight asshole could sate the disease that caused him extreme pain throughout his body. That disease, a faery invention, was designed to propagate the species but no one knew what far reaching consequences it had since the doctors in Faery never researched it.
Those who contracted the disease were usually banished from the Unseelie City-State.
Previously, the only known cure was for the infected to fuck the being who had infected him, who was ultimately that being’s mate. Luckily, Diana’s Curse, the Moon Goddess’s equivalent of the Fae Lust, hadn’t made Faolan uncannily fond of Jan.
As Prince of the Protectors, Faolan couldn’t have a mate. Fate had gifted him with more than one partner who could help, it seemed.
That was fine with the prince, he supposed. But couldn’t Fate have given him another woman? Did the Fates have to go give him a gay faery?
And must Jan whine so much? Or talk shit about his mate?
The trash talking was a serious respect issue.
Faolan could deal with Jan’s fashion sense, he supposed. And his taste in food wasn’t so bad either. But the 500 year-old faery needed to learn some damn respect.
Faolan shifted his weight in his chair and crossed his legs. He growled.
The door to his study opened and Anya leading Jan on his hands and knees, dressed in black leather shorts that rode up too high for Faolan’s taste. Dark leather straps that crossed his chest clashed against his pale skin. His tri-color eyes gave away his Seelie heritage.
Jan had been thrown in prison when Faolan was in the Unseelie City-state and had been separated from Millie. They had expected the wolf to kill the young-looking faery, probably intended set another example of why wolves and Faeries were a bad pairing.
Jan didn’t buy it. Instead he took all of the rough sex Faolan could dish out and begged for more.
Faolan sighed again. He hated the needs of his body sometimes.
Something had to change to make Jan respect Faolan as dominant. The young fae truly needed to get it.
Brutality didn’t work. Jan had taken his fair share of savage kinky faery sex. The Unseelie fae were known for their brutality in their sexual expression. That worked fine for Faolan. He could be ferocious and in fact, loved that side of himself. Millie recently helped him explore a softer side.
Maybe Jan needed that.
He looked up. “Anya, what do you want?”
The scent of cayenne and black pepper mixed with something Faolan recognized as fear hung thick in the air. Anya stepped forward and threw the leash at Faolan’s feet. “You fucking you deal with him. I’m tired and need to make dinner. He’s in the way and irritating as usual. I can’t believe—“
Faolan cut the air with his hand, a signal that he’d heard enough. “Fine. The little bitch needs punishing anyway. I’ll not stand for his blatant disrespect.”
Jan looked up, fear in his eyes.
Faolan sighed. He hated having to deal with Jan, but a deal was a deal. He couldn’t teach Jan how to be a faery - wolves weren’t faeries. But he could teach the boy to be humble and learn to serve.
That had been the goal once he accepted that Jan would rather die than be left out in the cold. Truth was, he wasn’t a bad guy.
He was just young and stupid.
Discipline could correct that problem. Hell, it might even make him stop whining too.
Faolan growled. “Stand up.”
Jan nodded and stood tall. His posture straightened but his gaze remained fixed on the floor.
Faolan waved Anya away.
She snorted. “Take that bullshit, wolf.”
He glared.
Jan shivered visibly.
“I bet you’re just like Millie, aren’t you?”
Jan shook his head in defiance. “No. Nothing like her. She’s a girl.”
“Obviously, fool. And you’re a boy.”
“Your boy.”
Faolan withheld a groan. He couldn’t show weakness in front of Jan, not right now. The boy needed a keeper as much as Faolan needed a mate. He offered a faint smile. “Why do you persist in annoying my charge, and my mate?”

BDSM Mentality for Writers

Those who took my previous workshop on Male POV/Creating better Heroes understand better why we love our Alpha heroes.

They’re strong, sexy, seductive and will do anything no matter HOW stupid it may seem, depending on their archetype to save Something Great! That one thing, that one person who can make him change his old ways of being which no longer work for him is the one reason he exists. Well, and to have hot monkey sexy with, LOL!

But BDSM Romance is a little more than just the basic needs. In order to write your characters clearly, you have to convey in your stories the why of things. Readers need to feel that they can connect with our characters and in BDSM, that is usually very clear. At least it better be lest someone who is an expert read this novel and point out the many flaws. For example, in Joey Hill’s The Vampire Queen’s Servant, Jacob Green is put through many trials and tests of loyalty. Rarely is he physically abused, and we’ll cover that part later. But he knows his purpose; it’s made clear as the reader delves deeper into the book. Lady Elyssa is the confused one here, which does happen from time to time with Dominants.

With any lifestyle person, we may be exploring control issues; abuse issues or abandonment, or fantasy. Ultimately, any issues we’re dealing with stem from a desire to grow and learn more about ourselves whether we realize it or not. Your characters who explore BDSM should have a back story as well, one that’s intriguing and helps the reader get to know them better. We want our readers to connect with us on one level as authors.

So, let’s begin by exploring the basics of a relationship in BDSM and how it relates to our romance stories.

The FIRST and most CORE issue of this lifestyle as I mentioned earlier is trust. I cannot stress that enough. Without trust, the entire relationship falls apart. The root of that trust starts within the person pursuing a relationship and his or her ability to trust someone else. Again, will they keep me safe? Can we engage in this activity, which could literally take my life if the person doesn’t love or respect me enough to be careful? Can they stop at hurting me and NOT harming me?

In the end, our Alphas want to keep their mates safe because they believe they are the only ones who can and that the world is a dangerous place. No doubt many of you are familiar with Laurell K. Hamilton’s Anita Blake series and have picked up on the numerous BDSM themes. Anita is a Dominant due to her own past and is often the one to act first in order to solve any problem that comes before her. Her submissive, Nathaniel does not out himself until more recently with the book Incubus Dreams in which he took an assertive role of submission and went with Anita because he believed she could and would protect him. He trusted her explicitly, but more importantly, his character began to develop more and we started to see the internal trust issues.

At his core, Nathaniel has to trust himself to be okay with his choices. He’s already passed one hump, being a stripper, but to him, that’s just a job which he detached himself from.

Richard has issues with who he is and what he is. Jean Claude is very accepting, as is Asher after some clever convincing on Anita’s part. She too is not IMO entirely accepting of what she is and who can blame her? Every time something happens, she ends up digging herself deeper into a pit where she has to do more self discovery!

But this gets old and annoying after awhile, or does it? If it did, Miss Hamilton would probably no longer write or sell books.

We revel in the struggle of self discovery because it intrigues us and sometimes makes us wonder if we should follow suit. In BDSM, the answer is usually yes.

On the outset for many men it seems to be a way to assert their masculinity. After all, typically we read about male dominants and their harem of submissive women. What better way to establish masculinity than by having access to five or ten women who I can fuck regularly with NO marital commitment whatsoever, right?

Well, once these men find their local BDSM clubs and groups, they quickly learn that the above scenario, while common is NOT so easy to accomplish. After the initial shock of having a great fantasy shot down, then the exploration can begin. Once enough emotional barriers are broken down either by a male or female dominant, the mind feels free of society stereotypes of what a man should be.

The male mind may initially reject male submission because it appears weak. The idea of kneeling in front of a beautiful goddess of a woman who obviously thinks better of herself than any man ever would is something of a challenge to many men. The statement “I could fuck her and rock her world” often is uttered by the myriad of onlookers and those who do not have their egos in check. Hell, I’ve yelled it before!

One look from her and the man either bucks up or shuts up. His reaction will vary based on who he is and what his purpose is.

The biggest misconception for romance writers when it comes to BDSM is the fact that if you take away (most of) the toys from a male Dom, you're left with an Alpha male. Remember that, as it helps define characters and lets you the writer, deepen your connection to your readers by letting them see just how well you write.

Writers are professional liars: it’s our job is to tell a story so well that the audience believes it’s the truth, at least for the course of the story. The technical term, of course, is suspension of disbelief – the trick of getting the reader to put aside any doubts that what you’re saying isn’t the truth, the whole truth, so help you God.

For erotica writers that means convincing the reader that you really are a high school cheerleader named Tiffany who likes stuffed animals and gang-bangs with the football team … or that you’re a pro tennis player named Andre who has a mean backhand and can suck cock like a professional. A writer’s job is to convince, to put aside doubts … in other words to lie through their fucking teeth.

As any liar worth their salt knows, the trick to telling a good one is to mix just the right amount of truth with the bullshit. You don’t tell your mom who went to the movies rather than church: you say you had a sick friend, that your car broke down or that you had a cold. The same goes for fiction: spinning something that everyone knows is a lie (“the check is in the mail”) is flimsy, but adding the right amount of real life experience makes a story really live. Rather than Tiffany and the football players, how about a young woman who really wants to do a gangbang but doesn’t know how to break it to her boyfriend or girlfriend? We’ve all had the experience of trying to find a way to communicate our sexual fantasies to someone, so that rings true … even though our character is a total fabrication.

Many books, websites and courses tell you how to write and sell erotica. But they stop there. The fledgling writer is left with the impression that these two steps are all there is to it. In short, that successful writers of erotica earn enough to live on by simply writing and selling an erotic tale, and then moving on to the writing and selling of next one, never looking back.

Most of us would be starving to death if that was, indeed, all there was to it. Try it yourself and you will soon discover, via starvation, how absurd this idea is.

In fact, for many of us, especially those who write erotic short stories and novelettes, writing and selling the story are only the beginning of wringing the maximum income from it. When my friend Harlan Ellison (primarily a short story writer, whose example, while he does not write erotica, is germane) finishes a story, he first sells it to the highest paying magazine market he knows of. Then, a year or so later he sells it to some anthology it seems right for. A year or so later he puts it in a collection of his own stories. Next, he typically sells it to a magazine that pays it lower rates but whose contents page would be enhanced by a story with his name on it. Later other anthologists may also purchase the story. These steps sometimes transpire in a different order, but you get the general idea. He gets paid four or more times, usually more, for each story he writes.

That’s why when I sell a short erotic story the first time, if the magazine or anthology wants any kind of exclusivity on it, I insist on a one or two period of exclusivity, after which they can still keep the story in their anthology, but I can sell it wherever I like. At the very least, I absolutely insist on being able to put it in anthology of my own stories, after a one or two year period. This is, in fact, how many short story writers enhance their income and manage to pay the rent/mortgage.

Last time I had the writing blog, we talked about eroticizing setting with description. Now we’re going to focus on what readers look for in any form of erotic novel: Character. I’ve learned everything there was to know about character from my mentor, Morgan Hawke. Remember when we’re talking character here, we’re talking solely about what sells, not necessarily what works for your niche readers. That is for you to figure out. For this blog, we’re going to share what works to create those characters that arouse not only our hearts and minds, but our genitalia.

The first thing we obviously tackle for character is description. What do we envision when we start putting pen to paper? What if that vision is hard to come across in our minds? The easiest way to create characters is to steal someone else’s! Use what’s popular in movies and TV such as Burn Notice. While that seems like cheating (it is) we still have to figure out a few key things.

The same goes if you’re queer: try writing something, anything, that you’d never in a million years think of doing. Maybe the story will suck, and that certainly does happen, but maybe it’ll be a wonderful story or teach you something about your craft.

Harlequin does WHAT?

In a move set to rock the publishing industry, Harlequin Publishing last week decided they were going to partner with a vanity press and launch Harlequin Horizons, as an arm of the company.

While anyone reading this blog or my other one at Radio Dentata knows I often do interviews of well to do authors in both traditional and e-publishing, I have never and will never have someone who is self published on the show. That woudl be akin to having a doctor who bought his degree from one of the Spam emails on a medical panel.

The truth about this nasty bit with Harlequin is that it no longer gives them credibility and that's sad because they also launched an e-book only arm called Carina Press which has potential to not only do wonderful things for the mammoth publisher but also for the many dedicated writers who see the e-book market as a viable alternative to print publishing.

The question now for Harlequin is what can you do?

The way I see it, they have two options:

1. Shut down the vanity arm and apologize for acting like a fool
2. Set it up, sell it off and never EVER do that again.

Happy October Readers!

Halloween is almost upon us! It’s autumn in California and I’m already feeling the chill! Attending Folsom St. Fair last (www.folsomstfair.org week was fun but a little more subdued in part because of the tough economy.

BDSM Writing Tip: Dominant Alpha Mentality

If you're writing romance in ANY form, sometime you're going to come across the Alpha male. Love him or hate him, you HAVE to learn more about how he works to create a better, deeper character that your readers will enjoy time and time again.

First off, raise your hand if you write paranormal romance. *looks
around*

Second, raise your hand if you write paranormal romance involving
were creatures *looks around and points at a few of you evilly!*

This section will explore our wonderful friend, Dominant Alpha pack
mentality!

When we talk about this mindset, we¡re really talking about the
person who feels at ease with responsibility for all things they can
control. Think about any Alpha male you've ever read. He appears
in complete control of every situation, is able to think on his feet
and stay one step ahead of the needs of those who follow him.
That's why pack Alphas in wolf stories work so well. They know how
to lead and control what they can control. They more often than not
must have fought physically for their position but strength is not
the only symbol of dominance. In a perfect world, we would have an
Alpha who would have finesse and make things appear seamless. In
Romance, due to the need for internal and external conflict, the
alpha can still give the impression that things run smoothly to his
followers, but we know not all the followers are privy to all the
details.

The Dominant must be capable of adapting to change, whether it
happens gradually or as is often the case in our stories (and
reality) quickly. Things happen and cause problems. In our plots,
this is perfect! Morgan Hawke uses the Reversal as one of her
plotting techniques and is successful with it. The reason is that
in our stories, when something happens that brings our characters
together, a problem is made evident. When the problem is made
evident, both characters will try a fix attempt based on their old
way of being. The solution may appear to work until BAM! The
Reversal! The characters are in even deeper than they were before
because this technique builds up suspense for our readers. Readers
are given an opportunity to bond with the characters and possibly
live vicariously through them. I honestly feel the two Dominants in
my life are similar to the Drake Sisters from time to time and it's
a wonderful feeling.

BDSM is also all about suspense, playing off the basic pain/pleasure
response.

Depending on the style of domination, female dominants tend to mix a
little more physical affection in with the pain. A light stroke,
some kind words such as "How good a boy you are!" or something along
those lines, a smile, something that lets her submissive know that
she's so in charge that she's paying attention to his EMOTIONAL
needs.

The reason for this is that it might mimic what she wants in her own
life AND give her submissive a chance to see that he can trust her.

Men tend to be crueler as dominants because they are not taught that
tenderness from the very beginning. Men may get that tenderness
from their mothers, but their fathers may be overbearing with
machismo. Men tend to believe a sledge hammer will do the trick
when a ball ping hammer is really needed. Especially with difficult
submissives that have deeper issues, this tactic often fails. Why?

Because the male dominant was not dealing with the issue. In the
Military, strength training and other techniques are used to break
the body down in belief that the mind will follow and allow itself
to open up to the new information/programming. Think about a
soldier¡¦s life for a moment. They are brought in with the belief
that even though war is a possibility, it¡¦d doubtful that they¡¦ll
ever truly endanger their lives. If you've been beaten down your
entire life by society, by your parents, abused by loved ones, etc,
you're coming into the Military a damaged being.

Each time you accomplish something previously thought to be too
tough for you, an old tape is lost and replaced. In the case of
abuse of any kind, the self esteem issue is the common one. What is
that tape? You're useless, you're just here for the abuser's
purpose, You're hated, you're worthless.

After basic training, just six weeks of intense strength training,
what happens? Your body changes and you become physically
stronger. You've bonded with some truly fantastic people and
developed a routine where people depend on you because THEY HAVE TO!

If you cannot let go of the noise from the past, you will fail
them. But what happens when you don't fail them? Your superiors
take notice, your platoon takes notice. You faced a tough
challenge. The old noise is lost to the repetition of support and a
form of love.

When you come out of the army, you know you can face anything. Move
mountains, be a productive and healthy individual. But the army
(IMO) does not deal with the one thing you truly need to deal with:
That haunted past. Only as individuals can we deal with our haunted
pasts.

A dominant will understand that you need to face those demons and
conquer them. A male dominant, depending on his style, may use the
same harsh words and tones that an abuser will, only to force a
reaction out of his submissive in order to understand her better and
deal with the problem either in play or aftercare. If done
properly, the experiences his submissive shares A: binds them
together tightly because she knows she can TRUST him with her
safety, and B: forces her to conquer her own fears. During the
aftercare, talk of feelings should occur to check in on both
parties. BDSM is highly mental because the MIND controls the BODY
as well as the world around it.

I repeat this phrase often that several of you should thank me and
pay me LOL! THOUGHTS ARE THINGS. Tangible things that create and shape our realities. If we're stuck, we need to either change our
perception or our procedure to get desired results. In BDSM when a
beating doesn't work, tenderness will.

One of my Dominants truly understands this.

She has watched me change over the last several years and can
recognize when to put the flogger down and pick up the verbal
control.

Why? Because the Dominant in question, like any good Dominant knows
what to pay attention to in her submissive. Her mindset must be
focused on truly tending to the needs of the submissive in order to
maintain control. True, that submissive is at the will and mercy of
said dominant, but what good is a disobedient submissive? There is
no reason for that relationship to exist if the needs of both
parties are not met.

So why the need to Dominate? Perhaps a deep seated need is being
met. Perhaps that person is just really good at it and loves it!
My Mom is a natural Domme in all aspects of her life. It may have
started out as a thing to do back in the day but for whatever
reason, Mom picked up being a Goddess and has never looked back.

For her, it fulfills her. For others like myself, it¡¦s partially
ego based. I enjoy controlling others. The need started when I
realized growing up that I had control taken away from me. Mistrust
of figures I should not mistrust and then came the fact that I¡¦m
really good at it!

Some women end up as dominant by default when they choose to date
submissive men. It's the same thing as BDSM dominance because there
is no double meaning behind the word DOMINANT.

From our books: Acheron is an Atlantean god, right? Mikhail
Dubrinsky is the leader of his people, because he was the son of his
father. Lady Elyssa is a vampire queen. Anita takes matters into
her own hands and is good at it. Most of the time. Anita is
actually a perfect example of a Dominant who needs to be adaptable.
It seems every time she sneezes, her life is fucked up. Someone
else has formed another triumvirate of power with her, she¡¦s picked
up a new pack member, animal to call, etc. And Richard, sexy as he
is, is STILL an ass! Any normal human might try to micromanage the
situation and quickly fail at it. Anita HAS to think quickly, the
lives of several are at stake in her world!

Are all dominants perfect? (Sascha is almost perfect!) Hellz no!
Should they be in our stories? Better if they¡¦re flawed, right?
Then we have our internal conflict.

Laurel. K. Hamilton has done a great job of creating a great set of
BDSM players because each one has a persona that fits the
Lifestyle. Each one is so obvious without being stereotypical or
overblown that readers want to fall in love with her characters.
Think about the first four books where there wasn¡¦t much spice OR
complication? Anita was still a Dominant, Jean Claude still fitting
into one of the very seductive archetypes while remaining dominant
in his own way which was severely different on the appearance than
hers. Richard was still a bitch. His issues get in his way.

KINKY WRITING TIP: Switches

Talking about BDSM and Switches, those magical, yet sometimes misunderstood role players in the BDSM lifestyle who can play both Dom/me or Submissive, we realize that we understand them only to a point as writers until we start digging deeper. This helps us create better characters, whether we're writing BDSM or not.

A switch is someone who is comfortable in either role as a Top or
Bottom, Dominant or Submissive. In the Gay lifestyle, they may also be
labeled as versatile (stick it or ride it!) Their "issues" may
be dual in nature or they may have multiple needs and recognize a place
for both dominance and submission.

For many, it may be confusion. Bisexuals often get lumped into that
same category as well. "They just have not met the right Top/bottom
for them." Mom asked recently in her LoveDommes

Yahoo group for switches to speak up because she sincerely thought that
we were a confused lot! Why would you want to do both roles?

Because Mom, it's FUN! Sheesh, don't you know anything? LOL!

Perhaps they have not met their perfect mate yet, a Dom/me or
submissive. There may be an internal power struggle for switches.
Society's rules vs. their true desires. The way they were raised
vs. their true nature. A switch has to embrace both parts of
themselves. In our earlier example of Blooregard and AnneMarie, there
was no switch. AnneMarie (as my definition fits!) is a strong willed
submissive woman. Once she learns the lesson Blooregard wants her to
(that he loves her and CAN care for her) then she will probably slide
into the role of alpha submissive. It may not be easy and she will try
to buck the system, but ultimately she wants to defer to Blooregard for
safety. Blooregard is a vampire. Ever met a submissive vampire? Well,
sure we have! Damien from Anita's world is submissive. Louis from
Anne Rice's vampire novels is a submissive vampire.

Why a switch? In a perfect world, with perfect relationships, all needs
are met by the people involved in the relationship. Balance is created
through that relationship for both individuals by both individuals.

In reality, with fucked up relationships and less than perfect people,
those same deep, dark desires require different solutions. What makes
me tick as a submissive may not make another submissive react the same
way. But what if my dominant cannot give me that feeling of control
through submission? Where else do we go? Do I leave and go back to
boring old vanilla land?

Hellz no! I pick up a flogger, scream YEE and start beating bitches!

Seriously, even that would not deal with the emotional issues as much as
I'd like for it to! Why? Because it's just physical pain
release. And enjoyment. Do I get a certain fulfillment from that
scenario? Yes but it's short lived.

In my first BDSM relationship as well as the One of late, Mistress
wanted to teach patience because Sascha is impatient (you're still
the greatest!) like you wouldn't believe! I want it NOW! I
can't get that as a submissive because people are constantly making
me wait for things. In Dominance, I can tend to those needs I have deep
seated in me. The need to care for someone else, the need to take out
frustration through healthy means, the need to get what I want NOW!

In submission, I am allowed to let go of the reigns and surrender to
someone else's will so I may get the things I need that I often do
not realize I need.

Notice I said need, not want.

Submissives with wants are like the joke about shit in one hand and want
in the other. I say this because submissives with wants often end up
topping from the bottom, which as we've covered, does not help them
to build a lasting connection with a dominant.

Submissives with needs however, do not always know what they need. Most
people are unaware of the things they truly NEED because we've been
convinced that we "need" a BMW (I do!). We need a bigger house.
We need fattening food. We need to watch stupid television shows. We
need to do this or that.

Bullshit! (Except I DO need that BMW!) Those things I mentioned do not
offer much more than material fulfillment and can make us temporarily
happy but do nothing to address deep seated issues. Anita NEEDS a
break. She refuses to let herself have one because of her fear that
someone else will die. Jean Claude is perfectly capable of helping her
run court if she would only ask. The same is true for Micah.

Anita's dominance will not let her take that break until she dies
and even then she's not sure she'll get it!

In being a switch, those needs can be met.

I would wager a guess that switches tend to lean more towards one role
or the other depending on the reward and personality, but again this
depends upon the person. Some people control so much in their world
that having to come home seven days a week and deal with a submissive
would leave them feeling empty.

So they come home five days a week and deal with that submissive and the
other two are spent AS a submissive. Or some such combination. The
point is, that those individual needs can be met through being a switch.

If that is so, you may ask why not everyone is a switch in BDSM?

Because people like my Mom don't feel right submitting. It
doesn't make sense to her as a Lady of Power. Now I know I covered
that submissives are powerful but in Mom's case, I think I recall
she tried submission once and it just didn't work out. She's a
natural Domina.

I'd love to put Mistress Littlestar (She runs Celebrate Male
Submission ) in her place but
that's just the asshole in me. If I were truly looking out for her
needs, I'd refer her to someone else who could guide her into a
better understanding of her Dominance through training and education,
rather than forced submission. In short, if I tried, the lesson would
not take. No matter what technique I tried (NLP, NAC, Personal
development training, several beatings!)

I mention Neuro linguistic Programming, Neuro Associative Conditioning.
I bring them up to emphasize a point. These are tools that when used
properly, can powerfully help a Dominant OR submissive guide others in
the journey we are all seeking. These are powerful tools I use to get
my way which often times is NOT selfish. Being a switch requires
understanding of such tools on a base level. Cyn has already
demonstrated that she believes highly in mental conditioning from both
aspects.

The switch has to become comfortable with his/her power and confident in
the abilities of others. That internal power struggle we spoke of may
rear its head in the form of confusion until it's been labeled and
filed away for dealing with later. But probably it will come up at
every inappropriate opportunity until it's dealt with. In truth,
switches are seeking a delicate balance from their partners.

One of the things I almost neglected to mention is that when it comes to
training, depending on the particular group (like National Leather
Association) or different BDSM groups, a common thought often heard is
that everyone experiences submission at first before growing into being
a dominant OR deciding they like being a submissive. The reason for
this is that it gives the person in that role more empathy and
understanding, which are key things when the submissive all of the
sudden has to control another human being.

The advantages of being a submissive in the beginning are many. The
Dominant who was once a submissive understands better the needs of
his/her partner. The Dominant has had some similar experiences as the
submissive that allow for faster response time because the Dominant may
share a reaction to a particular event. Make sense?

With my Beautiful Cyn as my example Dominant makes the most
sense for me. Out of anyone in the world I know, she understands the
trust issues "I" have and would probably take precaution to make sure
that I cannot retaliate should she screw up on purpose. Btw, that screw
up on purpose could be used as a training method. Cyn must ask herself,
"Why does Sascha have this belief? What is he hiding from? Did he have
a bad experience or is he just an ass?"

The answer could be all of the above, none of the above, one or two
reasons or some not listed. If you saw us play, it might not even
matter because I might piss her off. (Probably) People test limits of
others to reassure themselves that the person or people they are with
can be trusted.

Do you really think I'm such a self centered asshole who just wants to
make my poor Beautiful Cyn cry or get pissed off? No. If we're
connected on any level, her pain brings about my pain. But submissives
have lessons to teach as well as to learn Switches and Dominants do as
well. Seeing her cry would literally break my heart and I love her THAT
much.

BDSM relationships are about loving each other the same way vanilla
couples do, but with IMO a stressed importance on meeting our deeper
needs.

Sometimes the only way we know how to teach is through our old methods.
Until we're shown a new way of being, of thinking, we work on old belief
systems. Some of us are stubborn.

Recap of Cybernet Expo - Adult Industry Confernece

Cybernet Expo felt like a success to me! Having been there for Radio Dentata gave me an opportuity to learn a lot from network industry professionals with over 100 years of combined experience.

Well, spent the week with LAJ and the gang of YNot crew for an interesting convention. The basis of the convention is about adult webmasters and folks of that nature getting an education in order to grow our business together.

I picked up a really strong sense of teamwork and community in the way that I didn't see too many people glaring at each other. WEll, I glared at my producer a lot. Actually she glared back.

And I probably glared at DarkLady, but it wasn't an aggressive glare. Nor was the glare towards producer aggressive. Maybe, sexualgressive, in the way that Zap Brannigan has Sexlexia LOL!

Meeting SensualSEO, DarkLady, the folks from Seize the Domain, that was just awesome! LAJ allowed Radio Dentata to take over the YNot suite for an hour or two so we could al meet and plan for this radio station's growth, talk about opportunities we've discovered at the Con and do more. (Plus it gave me a space to NOT drink in LOL!)

I missed the panels I was supposed to attend, sadly due to lack of sleep and a need for a break. But it was good to spend time with Jean Marie of Renaissance E-books, meet Thomas Roche who is just about the nicest man I could meet, and get the education provided by the YNot folks, which will come in handy since I have a book coming up on hte subject of the adult industry.

Wednesday I arrived in San Francisco and found myself at Grants for a cigar, then made my way to the hotel to meet DarkLady and see Oceania along with meeting others in our crew. (Btw, Kelly Shibari's really hot too LOL!) WE had dinner, drinks and made our way up to suite that YNOt was in for a pre expo celebration. I was introduced to LAJ, Hone Lynn of F.U.B.A.R. (which is OT like FUBAR.com) and hung around enough to get my drink on.

Thursday, up and early with not enough sleep to make it to registration. Saw Jean Marie and M. Christian, met Alex of Sieze the Domain, and Toby of LoneWolf Internet Sales (whom I need to email, thanks re: OTCASH!) Hit up first seminar on Opportunities in Adult Internet Development. Skipped second one, let Jean Marie take that one since i'm not really a webmaster, and attended Organic SEO (hosted by our very own Sensual SEO!) Learned a lot in both seminars (we should be out for each other, not against each other, Porno industry IS taking a hit during trhe recession, how to strengthen my organic SEO presence online) then it was time for dinner and RackCo reception.

I met Amber and her mother, two women who are entrepreneurs with a goal of helping those in the adult industry make the transition to retirement (basically) along with a host of other people, had drinks with Jean Marie and her partner, then Oceania and Tiki...*licks*

That was Thursday, I'm not going to mention the strip club stuff other than to say that I was pleasantly surprised by Larry Flynt's Hustler Club. More in a few days!

Tips for new writers!

Hello Folks,

Know it's been a long time since I've updated this blog and quite frankly I'm thinking it'll be a longer time since the next update. But for now, I thought I'd offer some tips for new romance writers that bear repeating.

1. Don't worry about cranking out new material every month. Some writers are just bettter apt at writing than others. Brenna Lyons can crank out 30 full length novels a year, I can't. Chances are, neither can you.

2. Build your audience - This one goes without saying. It's the MAIN FOCUS if you're into this gig for making money. No real writer writes to soothe the soul. They write cause the muse won't shut the fuck up.

3. Grow a thick skin. This ties into my next point about publishers. But on this point, you're going to get rejected. That's right, someone will see your work and clal it crap, or tell you it needs work. Learn to take rejection and keep moving forward.

4. Don't submit to new publishers - This is MY personal beef. Too many new publishers have NO clue about business models. Look at Silks Vault and Venus PRess. Both dead. Learn from MY mistakes people. Go with the established big boys.

5. Think BIG. - Submitting to Ravenous Romance may get you published today but who are they compared to Ellora's Cave? (EC has an established track record that's almost 10 years long) This isn't to suggest RR is better/worse etc, but you have to know when to play your cards right.

5A: - Do your research. Who IS at these publishers? What are the other authors saying about them? How is their editing? How is their turnaround time with edits? What does the cover art look like? What are sales looking like? For this, go to the publisher, NOT the authors. Each author will give you something different.

6 For GODDESS sake STOP trying to get published QUICKLY! This is a business that takes time like anything else worth doing.

7. See 1 - Stop trying to get out as many relesaes a year as possible. That's called overkill and it leads to DEAD AUTHOR SYNDROME. That means you either die, or your ability to write dies slowly.

8. Take care of YOURSELF - This means regularly going for downtime, getting enough to eat, drinking plenty of water, keeping your head in check, mind clear (or whateve you call a good state of health) and avoiding unneccessary stress. This job is very stressful for a LOT of us, especially as you get bigger and mor eentrenched in the business.

9. Don't spread yourself too thin - I can't take my own advice but I'm addicted to workahol. YOU on the other hand don't have to be. Working too much can cause all SORTS of problems, including loss of quality in your work.

This advice may seem harsh (and I'm NOT taking shots at anyone) but it's true. This job requires patience of a saint that's sometimes hard as hell to muster, a plan both as a writer and a marketer, and a little lack of sanity. It's fun for those of us who do it.

I'm totally off kilter since the begining of the year but it seems that things are going steadily forward. I released a great Male Dom collection of stories last friday, have a new website up at http://www.saschaillyvich.com, have been generating feedback on Literotica and other websites where my stories are posted and have a personal assistant now that can afford to take the time for my PR and myspace crap.

I've noticed an interesting trend in BDSM literature, particularly mine. I've cut out a lot of the seemingly senseless brutality that I had in my earlier works and gone for more subtlety. Is this a result of what I've been reading? Or did Cyn have something to do with this?

I don't know actually. I figure it has to be a combination of both.

I don't have a set schedule right now, which irks me. I'm frantic about having a schedule. I like schedules. But it's not working out right now and I'm not sure what's really suffering just yet.

I still need to find funds for DragonCon. I'm determined to go and to take Morgan with me while I'm staying with her.

I had more to say but that's pretty much it for now I suppose.

Sandalwood incense burned while he sat at his desk, hunched over. With paper and pen in hand, he began writing out the note that would ultimately become a spell to bind her to him. She'd be part of their trio, a group of lovers that shared the world, their pain and joys together.

Siddella bit back a scream of pain as Valerie twisted her into a position of subservience as though she were a doll. “You’re not my dominant, let me go!” She struggled but quickly found herself pinned against the wall by the other woman.

Their eyes met, Valerie’s cold stare penetrating Siddella’s heart. She already felt like a damn loser for upsetting Ronan, but now she’d been caught off guard and forced against the wall as though she had no strength of her own.

Shoving off with her feet, Siddella tried to break free of Valerie’s grip but it was no use. The woman held on tightly and kept herself at a distance. “Fucking let me go!” Siddella screamed.

Then it came.

The slap across her face stung almost as much as the pain in her right arm from Valerie’s nails digging into her flesh.

This Siddella couldn’t ignore.

Valerie drew in a long, deep breath before exhaling. The warmth of her breath tickled Siddella’s nose. “You’ve been a brat. Prince Ronan has given you more than you know. I’d remember that if I were you, instead of letting those inner demons ruin what you have with a very special man.” Valerie cocked her head to the side and smiled, a new look reaching her eyes. She released Siddella and began walking
away.

For those of you who are following the last bit of the Opeth Pack Saga, here is more of Les's story. Enjoy the mystery!

The moon hung high in the sky, bright and rich with color. No wind blew yet the grass stirred with a power that felt very alive to even those in their graves.

Les stood, shaking dirt off his naked body. The least they could have done was bury him in his wolf form. He snorted. He touched his flesh, it felt very real, very warm. His skin was still smooth though the moon gave it a brighter color than normal. His sight was enhanced by his wolf senses as was his smell.

The elders were nowhere to be found.

Bastards.

The last thing he remembered was giving his speech to an angry crowd that had become rowdy shortly afterwards. They’d been moved by his words, the disturbing thought that the goddess and god would not save them and the fact that there was no paradise to be sought after.

Then the elders stepped forward, ended his speech and took him aside.

“What the fuck are you doing?” Les shook his head in dismay at his confusion of the Elders.

Snapping a finger, one of the elders forced a change in Les, making him drop his magick to become a wolf.

Skin didn’t so much as melt away or fade as it tore instead, causing Les to scream in agony. His hair stood on end while his eyes flared wide open until he stood on all fours with his muzzle pointed towards the sky. Searching for the scent of gun powder, Les smelled it behind his head and started to turn around.

A gun pressed against the back of his head and he heard the sound of the hammer pulling back slowly before the click of the shot echoed loudly in his head and then he saw nothing.

That was what he remembered, so if that was the case, how come Les was standing erect, muscles sore and not dead? Running a hand through his hair, he found it longer than it was previously, along with no huge gaping hole in the back of his head.

Cinnamon and spice, probably Hungarian paprika, scented the air. A female figure before him stood, cloaked in deep red and black from head to toe. She looked up, her lime green eyes penetrating him to the bone.

“What am I doing here?” He looked around, seeing graveyard soil, storm clouds, the lone female figure. Now, she smelled of death, of power. The type of power that man would want to use for his own will while avoiding the rotting stench of death.

Still, he didn’t like the odds of whatever this was. “Am I dead?”

The hooded figure looked at him with a stare that burned into the soul he was sure he’d lost. “You’re alive again because I wanted to settle things.” The voice was throaty, somewhat captivating,

Something stirred low in Les that he recognized as lust. But why? Running a hand through hair that now reached the small of his back, he scowled. “I don’t understand.” Les stepped back, his fists clenching. His hair had started to rise off his back as though power rushed through him and controlled him now.

A greater power than he ever knew flooded his body, forcing a cry from his lips. His eyes opened wide until he saw white light so bright that it burned is retinas.
The wolf inside bayed, howling loudly at the pain while trying to break out of his body. Les tried to control the urge to change but some part of his brain understood that he was in the presence of a deity, or higher power that needed his attention.

Straightening, Les cracked his knuckles and let the pain flow through his body. His brother Kiba could handle a lot of pain, so could Les.

Or so he thought until another pain stabbed him in the chest, the head and the eyes all at the same time, forcing his body to the ground.

Writhing, his limbs kicked furiously, frantically this way and that as something struck him in the head, an energy that filled him with both malevolence and all that was holy.

The two emotions warred with each other while Les tried to regain control of his body. It was no use.

“You’re mine now.” The female voice repeated twice, her voice a whisper over Les’s skin.

Les’s body stopped aching, stopped burning, the smell of flesh hanging thick in the air.

The putrid stench of death still bothered him, but he managed to stand. Aware of his nakedness, he set a hand on his hip, his cock springing to life. “What do you want?”

He narrowed an eye at the female deity.

Her hood fell from her, revealing a face so beautiful, so perfect and unscarred that Les would have wept had the emotions been a part of who he was.

His heart ached. She smelled of earth and musk, of wolf and pack. “You’re…” He lifted a hand, pointed a finger at her. “You’re…

Friday Flash Fiction - More with Les

Aren't you glad I didn't kill him off? What? YOu haven't read LOST yet? Shame on you! Anyway, here is more of "Haunted" from Les's story for the final book in the Opeth Pack books

10 Years Earlier:

There was a dream. He’d woken to a horrible nightmare that had him dying only in a manner unfit for a wolf.

Taken out back and shot like a common animal.

Les shuddered and sat up, his eyes slamming open to see darkness before him.

He needed to keep quite.

There was nobody here.

His senses alerted him to the silence in his tiny house. Kiba was still asleep in the room next to his. All was well. It was just a nightmare.

That’s it. Just a dream.

Resigning himself to a heavy sigh, Les ran a hand through his shoulder length hair and adjusted the covers. It was unusually cold in Hungary this time of year, but he had enough blankets. If he really wanted to, he could drop his human illusion and sleep as a wolf.

But that required energy he didn’t have.

Besides, he needed his sleep. Tomorrow he was giving a speech to the pack on behalf of Kiba in regards to this prophecy bullshit…

The next day, clouds hung in the sky, blocking any rays of sunlight from his view. Les stood in the center of the town with most of the Opeth pack gathered around him.

He dressed in blue jeans and a long sleeved shirt, his hair down over the sides of his face. His eyes focused intently on the crowd, many of whom were in their early twenties or thirties. The elders stood at the back of the crowd, keeping an eye on Les.

Nervously, he swallowed the fear coursing through him. Something was in the air, he scented it. Gunpowder?

No, it wasn’t manmade.

Too bad he couldn’t care. The crowd in front of him stirred restlessly even though they’d been there for only half an hour. Most of them had families to care for, or jobs in Budapest two hours away that brought income into the pack to help them survive.

But times have been tough. The drought, rampant wolf hunts and illness ran through Hungary, killing off many wolf packs and forcing changes within the Opeth pack policies that included forcing of a caste system in favor of abolishing talk of the Prophecy.

Les couldn’t handle anymore. He wasn’t rich, he wasn’t destined to become Alpha. Kiba, his half brother was. But Les was damned if he’d let his pack or his family starve because of some joke played on them by the deities.

He stepped up to the podium, aware that some in the crowd had wandered off. “Listen to me,” he started, raising his arms to his sides, “We have been fucked over by those who are supposed to watch us. They have forsaken us and condemned this pack to die!”

“Who has forsaken us?” Someone shouted from the crowd.

“Those who would watch over us. Our Lord and Lady no longer care for us. This talk of Phrophecy, of heaven makes us look like fools amongst the other animals. We fight, we trudge through tough times and yet we still starve. Who wants to live here in this world like that?”

Voices clamored in unison that what Les said was true.

“Who wants to live in a world where gods who birthed us turn their backs on us?”

More voices rang out as fists rose and pumped into the air for some sort of change.

“But what do we do?” Someone stepped up to the front of the crowd. “We can’t revolt against deities that refuse our prayers, we can’t revolt against the humans. They outnumber us.”

“No,” Les shook his head and leaned into the podium, raising his voice a notch higher. “We can’t revolt against humankind, not with the way they fight wars over the last century. But we can turn our backs on the deities. We can use our magick and force our way into paradise. Right now, my mate is looking for the lost key to
Paradise so that we may brute force our way in. Do you want in?”

He waited a beat.

A few eyebrows rose. “What of this paradise? Does it actually exist?”

Les glared over the crowd at the Elders. “If you’d believe our Elders, than yes it does. While I side with them on many things, my mate has reassured me that our ancient texts are unreadable by anyone but our pack witch—who has left us.”

“She died!” Someone in the crowd shouted.

Les eyed them with contempt. They needed a hard sell. He’d have to give it to them.

It’d break his heart to tell them the story of his mate having been murdered by one of the Elders in search of any information leading to them finding the Prophecy.

But if it was a hard sell they needed, Les would deliver.

How was your thanksgiving? Hard to believe it’s already the end of the year! We’ve got a LOT going on this month with two releases, Radio Dentata stuff and more fun things going on around the web!

This short snippet is from "Captured" my short sotry in "Gift ofHer Submission" which will be my first complete Male Dom collection, a trilogy of three male dominant stories dedicated to three very special people in my life.

Jean Marie told me stats on Male Dom stories at ReB, so I said I'd give her something Male Dom. Here's the snippet...

Sitting down before him, she swept her waist length hair aside and looked down at the salad he’d ordered. There was steak on it.

“You may look up at me now.” His voice was steel, neutral and deep.

She lifted her gaze at him, noticed how his long blonde hair framed his narrow face. Gun metal gray eyes peered at her through half open lids. Long eyelashes fluttered over round eyes. His lips were plump, kissable. Pale skin contrasted against the dark shirt he wore that covered a massive frame.

Casey wondered what he looked like nude. She’d seen a few pictures of him in a tank top, knew he had strong well defined shoulders.

“I thought you said I was dieting.”

Ronan waved a hand dismissively. “Dieting is bullshit, sweetheart.” He narrowed his eyes. “I don’t want you to lose weight. You’re beautiful the way you are. I want you to be healthy.”

She blinked. “And steak is supposed to be healthy?”

“Yes.” A wicked grin crossed his kissable mouth. “The protein you get there will keep you awake all night for,” he clasped his hands together, “other things.”

Her heart thudded faster at the last bit of his sentence.

“Go on, eat.” He brushed his hand in front of her plate. Flames danced in gray eyes that spoke of desire, sending flames tickling in Casey’s lower region.

She’d crossed her legs, felt dampness moisten her thighs. Even so, she took a bite of the steak with the greens. It was cooked perfectly and laid out on a bed of arugula. The spicy flavors of the greens mixed with the hints of black pepper in her mouth. She chewed the meat, tasting all the succulent juices from the piece of meat. “Mmm,” she swallowed and took another bite. “You’re not going to eat?”

Ronan shook his head. “I have wine. We’re beginning your lessons now though.” The glint in his eyes held desire and spoke of more things that Casey wondered about.

With a nod, Jessie took another bite. And another until the steak was gone from her plate and only crumbs left. She glanced over her water glass at Ronan, seeing his approval. “One might think you’re trying to fatten me up even more for slaughter.”

“One might think that statement was impertinent as well.” His tone remained neutral enough to hide the hidden annoyance.

Casey swallowed another sip of water, wishing for something else to put her lips around. Nerves welled up as the waiter brought another bottle of wine for Ronan along with a second glass.

“For the lady,” Ronan motioned with a hand at Casey.

“I don’t uhh…”

He tilted his head, giving the annoyed slant of his eyes a softer look. “This is about new experiences, Casey. Remember?”

Casey swallowed hard, the lump in her throat growing annoyingly larger. She agreed to this meeting, agreed to perform for him in real time.

They’d known each other for a long time and had sworn to meet up as soon as they were able.

Truth was, she’d snuck out one night and not looked back from the situation she was in. No kids, but an asshole of an ex husband had berated her and made her feel small. He’d criticized her constantly. Even when she dug her heels in and fought
back, he somehow still seemed to win.

The chance Ronan had offered her seemed too good to be true. Try it out first, just a few days and then decide. Come be one of his kept. His pets, loved, cared for.
Submissive completely to him.

She nodded and took the glass of wine Ronan handed her. Forcing the rim to her lips, she inhaled the sharp tannins and tartness of the berry before swallowing.
The liquid hit her tongue, confirming her thoughts. Bitter. Then as it slid down her throat, the liquid seemed to morph into something fruity with an acidic quality to it.

“See?” He clasped his hands together in front of him and watched her as though she were in school. “This game isn’t so bad.”

Casey nodded again. She took another swallow, this time a bigger one.

“Woah,” he caught the stem of her glass and kept her from drinking too much too fast. “The last I recall, you didn’t have a tolerance like I do.”

“Nobody,” she shook her head, “has a tolerance like you do, my prince.” She smiled. The alcohol already seemed to be affecting her head.

Or was that more nerves.

“We’re going to transform you in this game, my dear.”

“You mean change me?” She bit her bottom lip as she realized her mistake.
Ronan scowled at her. “Never. You’re perfect as you are.” His voice trailed off.

“But?”

He glared at her, his purple and grey eyes softening.

He’d sworn he wouldn’t treat her like a child when they were together. Their age difference wasn’t too bad, only nine years. He had promised to stop treating her like a child. Frowning, she set a hand on her hip and looked at him.

Stefan turned, glared at her and took her hand. His expression softened considerably. “Come along, sweet pet.” His tone was less dry than before.

That was better.

They found their room. Stefan turned to Katalin, retrieving the key card from his pocket. “Are you hungry?”

She nodded. “Yes.”

“Good. We need to eat.”

Setting her hands on her hips, she looked at him. “We need to fuck,” she declared.

Stefan turned, key card still in hand, dropped his briefcase and caressed a cheek with his free hand.

Rough knuckles brushed softly over her cheek, sending a tiny shudder down through her chest and to her plump lower lips. She tilted her head into his hand and smiled.

Bending down, he sealed his lips over hers and slid his tongue into her mouth.

Katalin pressed her mouth into his, feeling his slick tongue stroke the roof of her mouth.

A hand snaked around his head, her hand yanking on his thick ponytail while pulling him to her tighter. Stefan straightened. “Brush my hair.” It was more of a request than a command.

“Of course, my Prince.” Katalin reached into the top pocket of his suitcase and found his black brush. Slowly, she began to run it through his long blond hair, enjoying its silkiness. “I love the way your hair feels.”

His pale skin turned a light shade of pink.

Setting a hand on his shoulder, she felt waves of stress pour off him. She tugged the fabric of his silk shirt. “You shouldn’t wear this while I do this.”

He nodded.

Katalin continued running the brush though his hair, amused at the blue-dyed tips and silver streaks in his thick hair. This was inspired by "Today I woke up to the Rain of Blood" by Combichrist. I now know how my seven book Opeth Pack series ends...

Like most days, Les sat outside the tavern enjoying the weather. Once Józsi returned, nothing would change. Józsi was strong enough to enforce pack law should he need to, but Les wouldn’t buck the system. It was better to train as many as necessary for what lay ahead.

Closing his eyes, Les inhaled a long, deep breath, pulling the humid fragrant air into his lungs before exhaling slowly. He opened his eyes and saw Nicholaus walking down the street. The smell of blood was on his hands as was the scent of panic and fear.

Nicholaus had finally done what was required of him to be the new alpha’s right hand. He’d taken out his tyrant and the tyrants of his mates. It took him years to finally conquer his fears and the recent attack by a Turkish pack hadn’t helped matters for Nicholaus. But his two mates hadn’t given up on him.

Les sighed. “Good boy.”

Les finished his whiskey. A moment later, the bar maid came out to refresh his drink.

“Make it a double, please.” He offered her a smile.
Her smile was weak in return.

If he drank tonight, he might pass out and avoid more prophecy bullshit.

Yet the dreams wouldn’t stop. No matter how much Les drank, the dreams, which were really hellish nightmares predicting a future Les couldn’t understand would arrive. Once sleep came, Les’s eyes remained closed, but the vivid images in his head foretold of a war that was to come.

One where Les and the pack would be split but not into factions. There would definitely be blood.

Unable to scream at the sight of an ocean of blood, Les shook himself in the dreams.
He’d become lucid and mastered that skill early on, but he still could not wake himself. The vividness of his dreams remained before his eyes until someone would wake him from the horrible nightmares.

Les, the wolf and the man stood at separate places, one soul divided. The wolf was in Paradise again facing danger. Unable to scent anything, the wolf only knew that the man was not inside him at the moment. Surrounded by the enemy, the wolf knew that it had to fight and kill powerful creatures stronger than itself in order to prove a point.

Wolves could be trusted, even if some were fallen angels.

The man wondered what the hell happened to get him in the position of being on the defensive. Once again, Marco’s powerful jaws had ripped into his thigh.

The difference was that Józsi wasn’t aiding Marco, he was trying to pull him off. Selene was in the corner covered in blood and looked like a doll until her hair was pushed aside to reveal scratches and claw marks.

And a soft, feminine voice always lilted in the back of Les’s head, echoing that it was almost time for him to come home and know love.

Running a hand through his hair, he took another sip of his whiskey and leaned against the tavern wall.

Was it so bad to fear both love and what lay in store for him?
